About me
I am: 6ft 3, weigh 75kgs, 35 years old. I was born in Johannesburg, South Africa but was brought up in Durban.
I have been a triathlete for the past 15 years with a short stint as a professional athlete in France between 1999 and
2001 after winning the 1999 African Elite Triathlon Championships. I then took up my university studies with the Open
Univeristy, UK whilst working as a triathlon coach in France and moved to the UK in 2006 to be closer to my now wife Kate.
I also took up a full-time position as a developer in the IT industry. This year we got married and moved to Sydney, Australia.
I work: As a full-time .Net developer and I have an honours degree with the Open University in IT and Computing
I speak: English and French
I eat: Things as close to their natural state as possible. e.g. steamed vegies, fruit and lightly grilled steak.
I try stay clear of processed foods.
I like: The natural things in life but I do like technology and some of the amazing things that have been invented.
I also like travelling and writing.
I dislike: Re-heated, crunchy macaroni and economy longhaul flights
My life's highlights: Would be getting married to Kate. Winning the All African elite triathlon championships. Finishing my
Honours degree.
My sporting background: Is quite different to most. To be perfectly honest I was not much of a sporty youngster and catching up with past school
mates on the internet, they can't believe I do Ironman! I only started getting involved in sport (running) after leaving
school and when I moved from Durban to Johannesburg. I decided then that it might be a good way of meeting people by
joining one of the local running clubs. A mate there was into triathlon and encouraged me to join him at a race one day.
The rest as they say, is history!
My favourite race: Is difficult to decide on as there are so many fantastic races out there and I have fond memories from most of them but having
taken up Ironman last year, I have to say that Ironman races are absolutely amazing and if I had to pick one then I
would probably pick Ironman South Africa. Perhaps because it was my first Ironman (you never forget your first) and
perhaps because it was back in South Africa (I had not been back for some 10years) but it really is a great event
with great weather, great people and a great course.
My advice to novices: Would be to join a club and learn from others. Or better yet, get a coach; even if it just for short
while to learn the basics, it will save a lot of frustration. There are many pitfalls out there that so many fall
into and a good coach or club will help you achieve what you want to achieve quicker and with a lot less pain!
